Global warming. Fact or Fiction? After attending several conferences, where professors working at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) gave lectures about the effects of global warming, I am now a firm believer that global warming is indeed a fact. Just look at the weather. Last month while I was in Spain, the Thames River in London over flowed while other parts of Europe struggled with temperatures in the 120 °F. After sitting in the sun all day, my car is so hot that I need to wait a few minutes before I drive if I want to save my fingers from third degree burns. The world around us is changing, whether we accept it or not. So, when is our government going to do something about this?
After reading Josef Herbert’s article, “Governors Seek Action on Global Warming,” it was apparent that individual states are working to increase awareness and make changes in the hopes of decreasing greenhouse gases. By doing so, governors are hoping that the federal government will see eye to eye with the separate states and start taking action. So far, twelve states are working to limit the amount of carbon dioxide put into the atmosphere by auto-vehicles, with hopes that many more states will follow.
It is about time that the Bush administration accepts global warming and does something, anything, to help prevent it. In my opinion, even if global warming is fiction, like some scientists claim, what is the harm in helping protect our ozone layer and nurture the environment? We only have one world to live on, and the constant abuse of over population is putting pressure on our limited resources and acts as a threat to our future. In ten or twenty years when the younger generation starts to have families and children, what will the earth be like then? Although preventing global warming would be a costly project and not to mention extremely difficult, changes must be made in order to protect the earth. The United States, one of the most powerful nations, needs to get their act together as a nation instead of separate states and take this problem seriously. At least state governments and governors are working to prevent global warming. Hopefully, the upcoming elections will result in a new President whose concern for the government is far greater than what Bush has shown.

Global warning is definitely a problem that needs to be not only addressed by the federal government but also acted upon. The United States is one of the leading contributors to global warming with our affluent society and disregard for preservation of limited natural resources. Global warming is a major issue that must be taken seriously. We are a influential country in the world and need to lead by example. If you don't believe global warming is a reality you're an idiot.
Hey Rachel,
I agree with you how it should be a major factor in discussion now due to global warming symptoms already present in our everyday life, even here at Chaminade. Even if it is fake I agree how we need to preserve our environment anyways. I was looking at this youtube video about global warming and started to show how much we have "dirtied" our environment through our careless actions. I think as one of the leading countries in the world we need to face this issue head on. I agree the fact that yes it is mentioned sometimes, but it often doesn't get followed through. People need to realize what the future will hold if we continue what we are doing to environment now. Global warming is quite evident everywhere, especially living in the valley because we are affected by the temperature increase especially that ridiculous heat wave we had recently. The world needs to make a stand now.
Rachel-
I agree that global warming is a huge problem. This summer, I was talking with someone who insisted that it was a "conspiracy" and that global warming wasn't real. They believe that the carbon levels in the atmosphere are higher, but that the levels are cyclical, and everything is normal. I was shocked to realize that people would be ignorant enough to actually believe this. What shocked me most of all was that the person who believed this was a student at UCLA. Anyway, thats beside the point. Basically, one just has to look at the data to realize that our planet is in serious trouble. I think its great news that state governments are finally trying to affect some change. You also make a good point that as one of the world's most powerful countries, it is the duty of the US to set a positive environmental example to other countries. I think its time that our national government steps up to the plate and acknowledges global warming as a serious problem. We need the government to help make change. Until then, its up to the individual
Global Warming, schmobal warming. i am unaware to as to how it is effecting me here and now. im sorry bout i dont think we are at an immediate risk so i dont see the need to create a huge plan to find a way to stop global warming. yes action should be made. no it doesnt need to be made right now. our government is also not the only government responsible you know. i think we need to team up with other countries and have them contribute to the problem and put as much time and effort as we are into this issue.
